North Koreans are brainwashed into believing that they live in a paradise. Hyeonseo says her eyes were opened when the 1994-1998 famine killed several million.
Lee and others were able to watch smuggled movies from Hollywood and South Korea; showing the lies about North Korea.
Executions, labor camps, starvation are still a daily experience for many of her people. Public executions create fear for everyone, while very few ever leave the labor camps. Most are beaten, tortured, raped, or starved until they die.
Hyeonseo Lee was able to escape in 1997 through China, via bribery, changing her name seven times, and a few miraculous events along the way. She made her way to freedom in South Korea in 2008. She has since helped her mother and brother escape to South Korea.
Lee travels internationally campaigning for human rights. She has spoken at the United Nations, and her TED talk has had millions of views. Listen to her speech below.
I came very close to being locked up in an African prison as a missionary back in the 80’s. I still cringe at the remembrance of that moment in my life. Fortunately, God honored His Word of Matthew 10:20. The Holy Spirit did indeed give me the exact words to speak to the 2nd in command of the country, and the charges were dismissed. I will be forever thankful for that miracle!
