God reveals Himself through His different names in the Old Testament.
When Jesus arrives on earth, He arrives as the fullness of Jehovah of the Old Testament. God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself. The fullness of the Godhead dwelt in Him bodily. He is the image of the invisible God. If you have seen me, then you have seen the Father. The Father is in me. I am in my Father.
Jehovah or Yahweh means “to be” or “I Am.”
God told Moses that He is the God who always had been and will always be. No matter what happens on earth or in the universe, God will continue to be God.
All nations outside of Israel worshiped many different things as gods. Egypt worshiped cows, monkeys, and even beetles as god. The falcon represented Ra as the Sun god.
Moses told them, “I Am has sent me.” The eternal self-existing one is totally self-sufficient and will always be so, when all other gods perish.
Psalm 90:2 “God is from everlasting to everlasting.”
John 1:1,2,10,11 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God….He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.”
“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His Glory…”
Jesus Christ is Yahweh. He is Jehovah. He is the I Am made flesh.
Jehovah emphasized God’s Justice. Elohim, pronounced “el-o-heem” implies mercy.
Elohim means someone or something to be worshiped. Gentile nations around Israel worshiped bulls and others as god. They referred to these gods as elohim.
Worship is to attribute worth to something or someone. Pagans have their gods to whom they give worth. Israel was to give worth to Jehovah-Elohim.
Jehovah informed Israel that He was the only real God who should receive worship. Jehovah-Elohim became translated as “the LORD Is God.” or “the LORD God.”
- In Genesis 2:4 the LORD God created the heavens and the earth.
- In Genesis 3:21 the LORD God made tunics of skins for Adam and Eve.
In America many surnames like “Smith”, “Cooper” or “Taylor” originated from “John the Blacksmith”, “Joe the Barrel Cooper” or “Rob the Tailor.”
Yahweh or Jehovah became known as “Yahweh” or “Jehovah is Elohim”, or “the LORD the God”, or “LORD God.”
“It is in the process of being worshiped that God communicates His presence to men.” C.S. Lewis
“Remember: He wants your fellowship, and He has done everything possible to make it a reality. He has forgiven your sins, at the cost of His own dear Son. He has given you His Word, and the priceless privilege of prayer and worship.” Billy Graham
